Today just before lunchtime I met with my adult tutee Simge. The power was still out at CIES from yesterday's storm, so she called me to let me know. We walked over to the library and began our third session.
We began by reviewing the homework assignment I had given her. She was to take the prompts I had written and share something about herself using the present continuous tense. For example, one prompt was, "I dream about _________." Her sentences were great and very interesting. We addressed a few grammatical errors like missing articles and subject/verb agreement; otherwise she did awesome.
After this, I did an excercise in which I showed her a picture and asked her to describe what was happening in five separate sentences. Once again, she did fairly well but I could see the same mistakes happening as before. I decided to go a bit more in-depth on these issues and cite a lot of examples. She picked it up quickly and by the end was giving plenty of examples herself without me even asking!
We concluded our session with a bit of her homework. For her Speaking class, she had to interview a classmate and then write a presentation. She had a couple of questions about how to phrase certain ideas. I tried to guide her to the correct grammar by asking questions that made her think about the topics instead of leading her to the correct answer. She did a lot of self-editing during this process and seemed happy with her outcome. Before we knew it the hour was over! It is awesome seeing her progress even though it's only been three meetings between us so far.
