I observed Mrs. Vicky teaching again this morning, but this time with a different class of a different level. There were maybe a dozen students (three times more than the other class!) and she was teaching them mid-level material.
The students read paragraph-by-paragraph on their own and then she read aloud to the class as they followed along. Majority of the time students would raise their hands and ask about a word they didn't understand, but sometimes Mrs. Vicky would simply ask the class if they knew what a word meant.
The topic today was whether we agreed or disagreed on the idea that bottled water is better than tap water. The class came to a general consensus, with some points to support the other side.
I noticed that when someone knew the answer to a question they were very eager to answer, but many students were not as vocal as that.
