I tutored Andy for the second time yesterday, Thursday, July 9th. I was a little nervous because last time I noticed Andy was a little unruly. I wanted to keep him interested so I could teach him English, but also I did not want him to start being loud and running around. My activity worked for fifty minutes, but by the end of the session he had lost interest and it showed.
None the less, my activity incorporated coloring and matching words with pictures to allow Andy to build his vocabulary. He has very good pronunciation when he tries and I was surprised this meeting to have multiple conversations with him about various topics. His father wanted me to help him communicate in English more so whenever he gave me a chance I would question Andy on any topic. For example, he would say he played with a ball today and I would stop my activity and question him on what kind of ball etc... He surprised me with how well he could communicate because his dad seemed worried Andy would not be able to handle Kindergarten next year.
During the activity Andy knew a lot of the words I introduced, which at first disappointed me because I felt like I was not teaching him anything. However, by the end I believe I had taught him many new words like "classroom", "globe", and "map"(surprisingly).
Overall, the session was a success because I feel I broadened Andy's vocabulary and allowed him to practice free speaking. Allowing Andy to practice free speaking should be very good for his English skills because he does not get much practice at home. Also at Summer camp he is very shy because his English is not as good as the other children. I am glad to help Andy because at the end of the session his father thanked me gratefully, and said his son is not so nervous to speak English anymore.
