Bring fun games and they will come.
That is what happened on
Thursday at CIES when I brought Scrabble to play with Manal during lunch. Her friend, Abeer immediately came over and
asked to join in. Two other students began to watch and ask questions about the
game , they want to play next time. Half way through a few rounds,
Salem, Manal’s husband asked if he could join.
They say the more the merrier and it turned into a delightful hour when
Jennifer joined the mix too. I had given
Manal the option to work more on the TOEFL practice exam but she so enjoyed the
game we played the entire hour. We worked on pronunciation of letters, learning
new words and giving definitions of words already known but not totally clear. Everyone
had such a good time, we are going to play again and invite everyone to join
in.
Side note for Pam: I
had a eureka moment on Thursday which startled and pleased me. During our tutoring session when I asked
Salem to pronounce the letters as he was placing them on the board, he often
mispronounced the ‘b’ and ‘d’s’. An
example, grapes would become grabes.
Ironically, later in class on Thursday we discussed pronunciation issues. Arab speakers often have issues with those
sounds. Not two hours earlier, I had
seen firsthand examples. When we get
together on Sunday, I’m going to review my list that Dylan and I put together
in class as a practice pronunciation exercise. (Examples:
Ball and Pall, Beer and Peer, and Bowel and Poll.) Thank
you Mrs. Kim, perfect timing with your lesson.
