Jennifer TS#8

Early this evening, I met with Salem at Barnes and Noble. Pam was also there to tutor his wife.

This was my second session with him, but it was my first time tutoring him since the first session was a get-to-know-you meeting. I printed out a TOEFL reading practice test since I knew he had a difficult time trying to understand the passage and questions. I wanted him to practice reading aloud and help him with his pronunciation as well as vocabulary.

Wow, tutoring an adult tutee is radically different than teaching a child tutee. He had trouble understanding a lot of words and having to explain in simpler terms what they mean was difficult. I realized then I should have been more prepared. Next time, I will read the passages and go over words I assume he wouldn't understand so I don't waste time having to look them up. I need to focus on expanding my explicit knowledge.

Anyways, we couldn't even finish one passage, by the time our session was over, we only managed to read through three after having gone over pronunciation, vocabulary, and comprehension. We did manage to answer a few questions related to the paragraphs that we read. He was able to answer the first question, which was a vocabulary question, but he had a hard time answering others--inference questions, for example.

Next session, he wants to focus on speaking. Hopefully, I'll have an easier time with helping with his speech. I need to come up with topics that'll interest him and help him correct his grammatical mistakes. I'll be prepared this time!

Aja, aja!
