It was on to the floor for Zoe and me at my first tutoring
session with the 2nd grader. Jennifer Lee and I went to Zoe’s and Riana’s
home for our first tutoring session with the Ohs, a Korean family. Zoe has been
in the United States for more than a year attending public school at Gilchrest
Elementary. Her vocabulary is wide and
almost age appropriate but her accent is still strong.
She loves to read out loud- so perched on the
floor armed with my children’s books- we
ran through some titles: Dr. Seuss ( which she loves), Mickey’s Holiday book (
her favorite is Christmas), and Animal Homes
( cheetahs are her absolute favorite).
She has cheetah shoes and a cheetah headband. Not shy about her feelings or talking, she
readily admitted that she wants to just practice speaking English with me
during her sessions.
Before Jennifer and
I left our first session, we had both girls together for a few minutes to play The Pictionary Game. Riana won, guessing
immediately before the hour glass sand fell, the adjective “tall”. Zoe
and I are claiming it was because of our fine drawing skills which made it easy
to guess. We have also asked for a
rematch on Saturday, our next session.
