ITTS #5
The first
day working with Do-jun, I did the assessment and got to know him a bit. I
listened to his answers as I asked him questions about himself and about his
interest in learning English. He had good command of English and wanted to
improve his speaking ability. I decided to try some role-playing exercises to
simulate situations he might encounter. I went for situations he might
encounter when traveling abroad, such as ordering food at a restaurant, or
asking help from a store clerk, and even bargaining for a better price. I tried
to keep the continuity in our role-play as consistent as possible, so it
functioned much like a story.
I had him making decisions that would affect the
game and I tried to keep Do-jun on his feet by surprising him every once in a
while with a situation. For example, when Do-jun fell over sick after a theme
park ride, he had to go to the hospital, and the doctor was a crook and tried
to scam him. Do-jun recognized this and was able to reply appropriately. Also,
while living in Australia, he fended off a store clerk at a surf shop who
wanted to sell him too much equipment for snorkeling. I had him find buried
treasure while snorkeling and he was able to take it to the proper authorities
to receive cash compensation. Then he had to deposit his money in the bank, and
notify a police officer that the cashier was pocketing his money.
I feel like
it was a great introductory session and we had a lot of fun. I could see his
fluency becoming better as he grew more comfortable!
