TS #16 David
This session was a good one. Chris, from class, came in to
observe today. The two main stories we went over were about two explorers. I
don’t recall the name of the man, but the woman was Amelia Earhart. Before we
started reading, I had David read the title. It was something like “An Explorer
in Flight.” I asked David what it was explorers did, and he told me that they
discovered things. Then I asked him how explorers became famous, and on this
one he was a bit puzzled. So I used the example of Neil Armstrong and Buzz
Aldrin as explorers. What were the famous for? Why, for being the first men to land on the moon. Then
David understood that explorers become famous typically by being the first to do
or discover something. David was very attentive and interested as he read the
passage on Earhart’s journal and on how she was the first aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic.
At one point in our session, David brought up Star Wars and
became a little distracted. To keep him on course, I told him I would do my
Yoda voice at the end if he focused. This seemed to really boost his
motivation.
Overall, a good session. Throughout our sessions it was
obvious to me that David is an admirably intelligent and creative child; he
just needs mentoring and a push in the right direction.
