TS #15 David
Today we did more work in David’s language arts workbook. We
went over two sections involving Louis Pasture and Marie Curie. Before we read
anything, I had David tell me if he knew what a physicist or a microbiologist
was. Then I asked him to imagine the equipment a scientist might use. One of
the things he told me was a microscope, so I asked him what kind of research
microscopes might be used for, and I ended up supplementing his
explanation. After building his schema,
I asked him to read the passage out loud and he seemed very interested by it. I
think the trick was to activate the visual side of his imagination; he likes to
draw, and artists are by nature visual people. By asking him to imagine the
life of a scientists in the form of images, I think the reading material more
interesting.
I taught him that he could do employ that method of
visualization anytime he has difficulty understanding a text that is too dense.
“What’s the topic and how can I picture something related to it?”
