Chris TS#1

Yesterday I met my tutee, Simge. She is from Turkey. We met at Strozier Library and found a quiet spot to get started.

I began our session by asking her some questions about herself and about Turkey. We then moved on to more academic questions about her study of the English language. These preliminary questions gave me information about her level of English and what she hopes to get out of our sessions together. Simge is very new to English, so communication was slow at first. Once I got an understanding ding of what she knew I was able to communicate better with her. Sometimes we had to use hand gestures or a pen and paper to draw an idea that was u familiar.

Simge wanted me to help her with one of her assignments for class she was having trouble with. The assignment was to watch an American movie and answer some questions about it. She chose The Shawshank Redemption. I've seen this movie a few times so this made it easier to help her. One of the questions was a bit challenging for her. "What are some of the themes presented in the film you watched?" I helped her with the concept of theme and then asked her to tell me some events that happened in the film. By revising certain scenes, she realized some important themes. I was very impressed with some of the words she chose like "regret" and "justice."

For the last part of our session we reviewed some of her writing assignments, which I helped her self-edit. She caught a lot of her own mistakes after we took turns reading her writing. I also helped her with the pronunciation of words she knew but did not know how to say. I am already planning some activities and exercises for our next meeting now that I have a good understanding of her skill level.
