Waking up this morning was definitely a struggle for me. Who wakes up at 7:30 am on a Sunday? This girl does! But tutoring Rina today was definitely fun; her third tutor session was at 9:00 am. The day before, I went to Barnes and Noble and bought her a collection of Curious George stories to read. She pointed out she had a similar book that had a collection of princess stories. Her favorite princess is Mulan (right on!). She really liked the new book and was such an active reader when she read me the first story. She was a careful reader, so even before I could point out her mistakes, she would reread the sentence over again. She had trouble pronouncing "encyclopedias," and didn't know what they were so I helped her sound out the word and told her what they were. She enjoyed looking at the pictures and pointed out small details and asked questions. She was very keen. She wanted to read more stories, but I told her we would read one for each session, to which she sighed and slumped her shoulders. I laughed.
After we read a story, I pulled out a workbook to improve her reading skills. For the first lesson, we went over what facts were and how to identify them. She had a lot to say about the reading passages we went over together so I liked that she was paying attention and that the stories interested her. She learned what the difference between "foot/feet" were and liked learning about seashells (one of the passage we read today). There was a point during that passage when she wanted to share a tale of her own, but she couldn't explain it and started mumbling in Korean. I did my best to pretend I didn't what she was saying.
"What was that? Think carefully and try to explain it in English."
Eventually, she did her best and I understood. After we finished the lesson, we went into the living room to meet Pam and Zoe, finishing up their lesson. For today's activity, we pulled out the Pictionary cards and used those to play charades. After each card, Pam would ask Zoe or Rina to spell out the word. Zoe was amazing! She had guessed correctly almost every single noun, adjective, and verb. Rina had a little trouble at first, but she was getting used to it. This round, Pam and Zoe won. But that won't stop us!
Jennifer, your tutee sounds great! I am very jealous that she loves reading because Nayun does not particularly enjoy it. The dictionary game that you and Pam use for your tutees is also a great tool! I might do that with Nayun next session because she's very good at spelling!
ReplyDeleteIt definitely got the kids pumping. I think games like Story Cubes, Pictionary (especially if she likes to draw), Boggle, or Scrabble would be great to play with Nayun.
