Friday I met with David from Brazil.  He was very nice.  I asked him about the origins of carnival and at first he said he didn't know, but as time went on he remembered and he told me it was Italian in origin.  He explained that he is from the most traditional part of the country and it could be somewhat compared to the Southeast part of the continental U.S. that way.  He explained that greetings vary according to gendered constructs in Brazil.  I shared that I thought gender was a non-issue in greetings in the U.S.  I learned that David is studying civil engineering and I learned that the categorizations within the field somewhat vary between the U.S. and Brazil.
