Today I met Elif Simge Burcu for lunch. I'll just call her Elif and she agreed to just call me Jen since we both have trouble pronouncing each other's names. She's from Turkey and has a Communications degree. We went out to Carrabba's because she mentioned she likes Italian food. During lunch, she asked if we could take a picture together to show her mom how she's doing. She mentioned she was a little homesick, but she messages with her parents everyday. Then, we talked about animals, beliefs, boys (haha, girl talk), tv shows, etc. She's also a big fan of desserts, so we split a tiramisu together.
Because she likes desserts so much, I offered to take her to Au Peche Mignon the next time we hang out; she was excited about that I think we made progress as conversation partners. She's very sweet and polite. I asked her what her least favorite subject was in CIES and she told me she has trouble with grammar, but she has no issue with reading. Then we talked about birthdays (her birthday passed fifteen days ago!) and horoscopes, something we both like, and she read both our readings for this week (which were pretty good, by the way).
I guess like all first meetings, it was a little awkward (especially because of the language barrier). But we both tried our best to keep the other interested in different topics. I know she likes to swim and is a big fan of dogs. We shared a little bit of our cultures with one another and she asked me things about America and Korea. She knows another one of my CP's that I'll (hopefully) meet this Tuesday and showed me a picture of him so I won't go asking around who Nedal is (haha). She's interested in cars so I'm thinking about taking all of my CP's to the Automobile Museum, get us walking and talking instead of sitting around.
Simge is my tutee and is awesome. Glad yall had a good time!
