For my first class observation, I attended Andrew Wilson’s
4A grammar class. I felt that it was a good experience and allowed me better
understand how grammar is taught to students studying English in an advanced
class. The teacher went over simple past tense and past participle. He asked
students to make some sentences using words that are commonly used with those
tenses (just, already, yet). He also explained the differences between for and
since when talking about something happening over a period of time. Students
also gave small speeches about their countries using the past and the present
tense. The students made very few mistakes and the teacher wrote down any
mistakes and went over them after their speeches were finished. The teacher
gave a quiz asking questions on active and passive verbs that required both
learned knowledge as well as knowledge of how to use them. The class finished
up with an exercise in the grammar book that asked the students to fill in the
blanks with the correct verb and tense.
