Dylan TS#1

My first tutee session was great! I met with my child tutee, Nayun, at 10:30 Wednesday morning. I met her and her father at Leroy Collins Library. Her father left us alone quite quickly, which made Nayun very unhappy. The first thirty minutes of our meeting consisted of me asking simple questions to try and coax Nayun out of her shell. She could spell alright, but she would not speak to me at all. Finally, the breakthrough occurred when she got a bucket of crayons and a picture to color. From this point on Nayun was laughing, talking and playful.

When Nayun finally started communicating I decided I would take the rest of our time to get to know her and allow her to get comfortable with me. As we talked I tried my best to asses her speaking for the short period of time she spoke. She seems to be a little behind her peers with speaking and writing. Overall, I feel that this meeting was perfect because Nayun and I were comfortable communicating with each other by the end of the meeting. I am optimistic that at our next meeting I can really start teaching her English.

  1. Nayun? That's my sister's Korean name. Good luck to you! I think incorporating color and drawing activities would help her come out of her shell. One of the worksheets I gave to Rina was a "My Favorite Things" worksheet, where she draws out her favorite things and explains why: favorite dessert, favorite book, favorite things to do with her friends, etc.
