Today, I met with my adult tutee--Salem Alamri from Saudi Arabia. He has a bachelor's degree in mathematics and is trying to get his masters. He doesn't have much trouble speaking when I asked him questions, but I think his comprehension needs to be worked on. I had to rephrase my questions a few times for him to understand. He mostly wants to practice his speaking, which should be no problem. I know he doesn't like grammar, so I'll be focusing more on practicing that with him so the concepts are embedded into his head. He came to the States about 6 months ago with his wife (who, evidently, is Pam's tutee! Haha.) and he's already traveled around Florida for a bit--visited Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa, etc.
He likes action/comedy movies, so I'm thinking maybe I'll assign him to watch a movie and he'll have to explain to me the plot. I'm not sure. Still trying to think up ideas before our next session.
Anyways, he mentioned he has no issues with writing on paper, but on the computer, it's a little difficult since he's not used to our keyboard. So I plan to help him do most of his assignments on a computer, just so he can get a feel for it. Other than that, I assured him I would do my best as a tutor-in-training. It'll be hard to meet up with him since he only wants to meet during the weekends. I'm not exactly sure how I'll squeeze in 7 more sessions, but I'll just have to try my best!
I am glad I found this post about Salem. I am trying to prepare a speaking activity for my fill-in session with him. I am thinking about using questions from the TOEFL speaking test. I have tutored somebody like this before and usually it was pretty intriguing.
