First sessions are often get acquainted time between tutors
and students and Manal and I did go through the usual get to know each other
list of questions. “Where are you from”? Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. “How long have you been
in Tallahassee?” “5 months”. But very quickly we were on to more personal and
in this case tasty topics. Manal is a
newly wed,so she was eager to launch
into a wonderful and elaborate story about her wedding day in Saudi Arabia,
with a few comments from her groom who joined us and the help of a translation app.
It turns out many traditions in her country are the same for brides. She carried a lovely bouquet down the aisle,
the day was a large gathering of family and friends and her gown was simply
gorgeous.
Manal may have left
her family and country behind while she studies but she is bringing kapsah to Tallahassee. She gave me a mouthwatering ingredient by ingredient
version of the traditional chicken or meat dish. Salem her new groom confirmed this was Manal’s
signature dish though he did add he is a good cook too.
Are you going to be tutoring the husband, as well as the wife? I wonder if tutoring both of them together will reduce their affective filter and help them learn English quicker.
