For my first
tutoring session I met with Pavani from India. At my last class observation, I
asked people who wanted help, or just to talk, to give me their information.
Pavani was very interested. I helped her with a presentation she had to give in
her speaking class. The topic was school in her country versus school in
America. Because I observed her speaking class, I already knew the guidelines
for the presentation. She created a Powerpoint and used a split screen to
compare and contrast. One question was, “What does the classroom look like?”
Her answer for India was, “It is in rows,” and I asked her, “What is in rows?”
She was able to correct her sentences in this manner. She caught her mistakes
when I emphasized them, and I gave her a few suggestions here and there.
Mostly, I would just repeat the sentences she formed and she knew where she had
made the mistake. I told her to contact me if she ever needed any more help,
but I’m not sure if this will be a regular thing.
