TV Le TS #2

(Tutoring Obersvation #1)

On Friday morning (June 26th), I had the opportunity to observe Dylan's tutor session with Nayun, a child that I am also tutoring. I noticed that she was shy with him at first, but after some light questioning she came out of her shell.

Dylan had her read a passage about birthdays that he had printed onto a worksheet. When he got to certain terms he thought she may not know he asked her whether she knew them or not and almost every time she would shake her head no, although she did know most of them. Dylan would underline the terms for a spelling check after reading. I found this very interesting. He told me that if he introduced the words for her to see and emphasized them by discussing each one a bit, it might be easier for her to spell afterward because she's recently seen them and talked about them.

In my opinion, this approach worked very well because Nayun is already very good at spelling and she was able to work her way through most of the words, with little help from Dylan.

He transitioned into a different activity when he could see Nayun losing interest and focus. He would ask her to spell certain words (from his other worksheet) and also had her draw them, if possible. This kept her interested in his lesson because she enjoyed drawing with him. I honestly think that he had a good mixture of educational material and activities that Nayun enjoyed participating in.
