For my second
tutoring session I met with Boram from South Korea. Boram’s English skills are
excellent; however, she emphasized that she struggled with speaking. We went to
Panera Bread for lunch and a tutoring session. Because it was our first session
together, I used this as an introduction, and tried to get to know her level
and proficiency of speaking. I used a notebook and jotted down grammatically
incorrect sentences I heard during our conversation. I also recorded her
speaking about her childhood for two minutes. At the end of the session, I
showed her some of the sentences I wrote down, and her reaction was, “Oh, I
said that?” It was good for her to
see her mistakes. She knew how to fix them instantly. After, we went over the
recording in my car as I drove her back to campus. We stopped the recording every time she made a mistake. Most of the time, she would stop the
recorder herself and comment on the awkwardness of her sentence structure. I
want to record her at all of our meetings so she can see her improvement over the next
few weeks. Overall, she was so grateful for my time with her. I even offered to
tutor her five-year-old son, and I look forward to working with him soon.
Jackie,
ReplyDeleteIt was such a great idea to record what she said and have her listen to it! It seems like the perfect activity for what you're trying to improve with her.
