A map of Florida was the centerpiece
for my first conversation session with Sarah. She and her family just arrived
from Saudi Arabia 2 weeks ago so she was fascinated to hear about all the
wonderful beaches, fresh water springs and Spanish forts found within a few
hours drive from Tallahassee. We talked about St. George Island, the Gulf Marine Lab where her 5 year old son can
actually touch and feel marine life and Apalachicola oysters.
Next session she
wants me to bring more information about these sites and Sarah is bringing her
vocabulary words so she can practice sentences using her new words. She tried out a few sentences on me with this
week's vocabulary: crying, mad, angry
and enjoyed the practice.
Lesson learned this session- when I speak or when I'm explaining something, every
once in a while, stop and ask my partner if she completely understands. I need to ask a question so she must respond in a way
that I know she understood what I was explaining. Though Sarah nodded and said
she understood, sometimes her questions just moments later showed she had not
completely understood. But I could tell she was so interested and really wanted
to know what I was explaining so she continued to ask questions on the topic.
Wow, good advice! And also, I admire how you are pulling "lessons" out of each session. That's something we could all do.
