Boram CO#1

6/24/2015 Room 302 Group 3B IN-HI
I observed the ClES speaking class. Instructor’s name is Calyn Stringer.
At the beginning, instructor was using ppt for showing chart.
She reminded students of the inventory questions by showing chart. Some students answered that they spoke English more than three hours daily and others said 2 hours a day. Next PPT shows the topic preference. Students liked to talk about the topics such as tv and movies, current events, sports and strange mysteries for the non academic part. Students also prefer to talk about history, technology, culture, environment, and education. Instructor moved to talk about the weakness when they speak. Time of speaking, presentation in front of other people, and brief pause in speech were the difficulties. Their goals are being confident, learning a lot of vocabulary, and speaking accurately.

Instructor then used the document projector, and gave some example sentences to have students fill in the blank. The sheet was for the next day’s cultural workshop preparation. While students were writing down, instructor circulated the classroom and gave help when necessary.  After that, instructor provided vocabulary lists for useful phrases: I Identify as a __(noun), I consider myself a + Noun/Adjective, I value +___noun__, I am crazy about___.  Instructor wrote down these useful phrases and she gave example sentences, and asked students randomly to make sentences using the phrase. Instructor did correct errors with the explanation of part of speech.  Then, instructor divided 5 groups of students. Each group made five questions about the other nation’s culture, and they stood up and had time for the question and answer one another. Instructor also participated the conversation. After finishing conversation, instructor reviewed the previous class about this question, “where do you see yourself in 10 years”.  Instructor encouraged students to do pair work this time and talked about this question. During pair discussion, instructor circulated and gave students feedback. To wrap up the class, Instructor gave students the notifications. Overall, instructor interacted with students very well, and she really gave each student opportunities to talk as much as possible.
