Today I met with Kwangho at Roboto’s and
we had sushi and Mongolian chicken. Kwangho had to call a Korean friend and
tasked me with listening to the dialoguge since I am learning Korean. I could
only pick up about 10% of the words but I knew what level of seriousness and
what topics he was talking about and he tried to teach me some more. We
discussed the housing situation more and talked about our third roommate. We
had plenty of things to discuss about our roommate and this gave Kwangho more
insight to the American culture. Our roommate has a child out of wedlock and a
wife he recently married so I told Kwangho that this is a common epidemic among
young Americans. Kwangho told me the same thing happens in Korea but people
rush to marry as to have the child birthed in a married family rather than
between two unwed parents as to avoid controversy and shame.
We shared opinions of how this is a problem
because of an extremely flawed sexual education system as well as the religions
hindrance of seeing sex as taboo and having many religious insurance programs
and teaching attempting to get rid of contraception. We talked about abortion
and how debated that is in the U.S. We found humor that a Planned Parenthood
establishment was right next to the Pho 7 restaurant, as Vietnamese Christians
are adamantly against abortion.
