Room
310 / group 3B / Reading class / Mr. Wallace Gowens
Instructor
asked students to put their phones in a basket before the beginning of the
class. There was PPT on the screen with preview questions.
(1)
After CIES every day how do you spend your free time?
(2)
Do you find focusing while studying easy or are you easily distracted?
(3)
When you have to study for a big test, do you have a study routine?
Instructor
gave answers using his own experiences and students talked to the questions to
partners and instructor. Then, instructor moved to the active reading and gave
40 minutes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd reading
comprehension practice. For the first time, students were asked to read through
the entire article and underline or highlight new vocabulary. This time,
students were not allowed to use dictionaries. Instructor explained that native
speakers do not look at dictionary in the middle of reading articles and
students should learn vocabulary in context. Students were encouraged to talk about questions
freely with the partner this time. The second activity was about rereading.
Students were asked to think about how paragraph relates to the whole text, and
identify for writing the outline. Students shared their outline in groups and
added any missing information. The last activity was reading article again to
reinforce the vocabulary. This time, instructor allowed students to use paper
dictionary to look up vocabulary. Instructor circulated the classroom and gave
answered. Then, classroom talked about 4th of July to help to elaborate
the sentence. Instructor asked questions and corrected errors about tense and awkward
words choice in sentences. Then, instructor gave homework. Instructor also
provided a quick helpful tip about how to use strozier library’s basement and
individual room. After finishing class observation, I asked a questions about
the paper dictionary usage. Instructor strongly recommended paper dictionary to
know other meanings, connotation, and collocation. Instructor was very
passionate and students were actively participated.
