On July 19, for Luiz Fernando’s tutoring session, we focused
on reading comprehension. I sent him several worksheets with reading material,
vocabulary, and comprehension questions. The reading material was about the
fourth of July, so we talked about this subject and also Brazil’s independence
day to build some background. We discussed the vocabulary on the worksheet. He
read each one with the definition out loud. I tried to give examples and put
the words in context to make it easier to understand. Afterwards, I had him
read the passage silently, circling words or ideas he did not understand, and
we discussed them. Then, I read it out loud to him. I asked him what he thought
of the reading and he summarized what he understood from it. We then went over
the comprehension questions together.
