Chris TS#5

Yesterday I met with my child tutee for the second time. Mathew is very bright but needs motivation in order to stay focused. I thought it would be a good idea to create an agenda for our meeting. I drew a circle and divided it equally into 4 sections. I told him we would spend 15 minutes of our hour doing four different activities. He seemed to like this because he could anticipate what would be next.

First, we began with reading comprehension. He flew through the passage and this was evident when his answers to the questions did not make any sense. We re-read the passage and his comprehension was much better.

Next, we moved on to a sentence completion worksheet I had brought. He was to fill in the proper verb tense. He did okay, but missed 25% of the questions. This must have been due to him rushing or not fully reading because when we reviewed them he knew the correct answer right away.

Our third activity was vocabulary based. I had looked up 8 5th grade level vocab words. I divided a piece of paper into 8 sections and wrote the words on the front side of the paper. He was to define them and draw a picture on the back. He really enjoyed this activity and it ended up taking about 25 minutes of our session.

Finally, for homework, I helped him check out "Call of the Wild" from the library. He is to read the first 50 pages by next week and we will review what he has read.
