Dorothy
prepared me real authentic Chinese food at her apartment for us. My favorite
was the Yianjinrou, what is a salted cooked pork dish. What she made beat out
what I had in China during my study abroad trip there. This was real Chinese
food cooked perfectly to the tee! After our delicious dinner, we focused on
what Dorothy needed to accomplish and what she needed help with. With a TOEFL
exam next week, a research paper due in two days, and many finished essays she accomplished
with good grades, but wants more suggestions in, I had much to do with her. I
tried to advise that she look into poetry because that is what she lacks in her
papers. The ferocity, passion, and strong vocabulary that makes papers
interesting and stand tall. Poetry emphasizes using words in very abstract
manners, talking about very hard to grasp images, and talking in a rhythmic
beauty that is powerful yet short. We spent 2-3 hours going over her work and
what she could’ve done better. We even did an exercise of which I had brought a
worksheet for. The worksheet had pictures of awkward situations, and I let her
look and think about them for 30 seconds, then have her write everything about
them in 5 minutes. For example, we did a picture on a crying kid kicking the
seat of a man trying to read his newspaper on an airplane. Dorothy needs help
in immediate writing with strong words which I hope poetry can help her with.
