Sean CO #3
The
third class I observed was with Ms. Sohan who taught Foundations, Speaking. The
class was very tight knit with just four students, the fifth coming in halfway
through the class. Ms. Sohan tasked the students with a practical situation of
filling out a paper with personal information correctly, which is essential in
adult life where everything must be documented accurately and correctly. The
students attempted to write their full address and phone number on a board, and
share it with the class by repeating it out loud with complete oral grammatical
syntax. Many students struggled not only with writing, but pronunciation as
well, being a foundations class. The small classroom is ideal for such things,
as it gives everyone more attention and ability to practice and develop the
English language. Ms. Sohan did two things that I enjoyed in her teaching
tactics. The first was that she spoke very slowly and loudly, emphasizing
proper pronunciation so that students could both understand better and see how
her mouth moved to allow an opportunity for imitation. The second was her
attention to students, any question, struggle, or irrelevant information she received,
she replied back with a pleasant, interested, attentive attitude. We finished
the class by attempting to fill out a health form, which proved difficult for
many but was a necessity.
