Jennifer TS#11

It's been a week since I last saw Rina. I was a tad bit late due to traffic. But when I walked in, Pam told me how the girls were asking for me (which I thought was pretty sweet; Pam was always the fun one). We all huddled together and looked over at brochures and magazines Pam brought and it piqued the girls' interests. They told us about all the places they've been and the things they've done. Once in a while, Zoe would ask random questions like who our favorite Disney characters were, or what my favorite flower was, etc. I liked her curiosity.

Afterwards, we got together to play the states game Pam brought in from past session. The girls were just as competitive as they were last time and it was nice to watch them remember the capitals and nicknames. Pam had to leave a little early, so I spent the next hour listening to them read a story aloud. I corrected any pronunciation errors they had. Then, as a final activity, I brought out their whiteboard and suggested we write a story. Each person took a turn to write one sentence until the story ended. I wanted to bring out their creativity, so I made sure my sentences were odd.

Basically, our story was about a certain manatee who solved the mystery of a kidnapping. Suddenly, there was an earthquake so all the manatees had to come on to land. They turned into talking and singing pineapples and led themselves into a grocery store. One of the pineapples was mistaken for a "pineapple pet" and given to a neighbor. Then finally, the talking and singing pineapple pet was eaten by a mouse. The end.

They laughed so hard and even scuffled with one another when it came time to read the story aloud. I suggested they each take a turn reading a sentence each. And when it came time to choosing a title, Rina wanted me to choose hers over Zoe's. I didn't want to be the one to decide so I suggested we combine the titles instead. I thought tutoring one kid was hard, but two? Dang... I had to keep flipping back and forth giving each of them my undivided attention. I'm glad they were so engaging though. I made sure to look over any grammar, spelling, or punctuation mistakes they might have made, but they caught most of their mistakes themselves so I honestly didn't do much.

Random note: Whenever it was Zoe's turn to write, Rina would sit on my lap and I thought that was so cute and kind of rewarding. (:
