Class observation class became class participation class
during the Foundation Speaking class on Monday.
The class, usually small with just 4 members, became even smaller when one
missed class. So Leslie, the professor
asked me to sit in and participate so each class member had a partner to speak with during the hour.
The topic was going shopping or what you might say at a store. In pairs we began asking each other questions about making
store purchases? What did Dan buy at the
florists? What did Dan buy at the
Chocolate store? How much did it cost? How did he pay? Did he use cash, credit card or check? We switched roles so each of us had a chance
to ask questions and also formulate the responses on demand.
The second half of the class was spent on compliments. We discussed what a compliment is and how it
is used in casual conversation. Leslie pointed out that it can
even be used as an icebreaker or conversation starter. Some examples: "Where did you get that purse? " "I like your jacket, where did you buy it?" Again we paired up and asked each other questions. “Sara, where did you buy your shoes?” Sara in turned ask me “Where did you get your
watch?”
Though the class was foundation level, the students could put
together simple sentences reading from the work sheet. Because the class was
small everyone was engaged speaking the entire hour.
