Dylan TS#6

My first tutoring session with a adult could have gone better. I had material prepared to test Pinar's skills, but when we met at Starbucks today, July 13th, she wanted to study her homework. She wanted me to help her with writing an introduction paragraph and adjective clauses. We started with the clauses that I had to look up online to refresh my memory. I had a hard time explaining to Pinar that I was looking up how to use adjective clauses so she kept bombarding me with more questions. I quickly became overwhelmed, which I think showed with my answers to her questions.

We then moved on to writing an introduction paragraph, which also had some bumps. She said she freezes when writing introductions in class. I went through the steps of explaining the thesis statement, listing the main points etc.., but she said she knew all that already. I tried to avoid making sentences for her because I know we are supposed to refrain from doing student's homework for them. I was at an impasse, I could not show her examples sentences for her paper because she could then just use them. Yet, she knew the form of an introduction paragraph already, so giving her a template was not of much help either.

In the end, I told her we can meet tomorrow and I will have material prepared for the topics she wants to study. Hopefully she has not lost faith in me and I can redeem myself tomorrow.

  1. This is hard. I want to show empathy for students at the same time as respecting the appropriate boundaries. Sounds like this was a tough, but valuable learning experience for you Dylan.
