Joel CP#2

During our second conversation partner meeting, we discussed a number of topics. One of the things we talked about was jobs and which jobs were considered high level, high paying or just highly coveted. Boram said that, in Korea, doctors and lawyers were considered high level jobs, similar to how it is in America. She also said that a lot of people want to become teachers but you have to take a test called 임용고시 (im-yong-go-shi) and that it is very hard. A lot of times you also have to have a PhD and have graduated from a western university in order to become a professor. She also said that bullying is a big problem and that among the boys, there are always fights to see who the best in the school is, but the teachers don’t always try to stop these fights. We also talked about how, in America, if a parent punishes their child in public someone might call the police, whereas, in Korea, nobody would call the police for something like that. I feel like it is interesting and insightful to compare two cultures, especially one’s that can be so different like America and Korea, and can allow for a different outlook on things that one normally would not think about.
