My second tutoring session with the two girls was on the day
before July 4th. As a result, I thought it to be appropriate and
wise to have an English activity involving American’s day of Independence. As
well as holding the desire to make the lesson fun, I brought word searches of
July 4th terms such as “barbecue”, “freedom”, “colonies” and “fireworks”.
I also wrote a list of at least sixteen Independence terms and refreshed them
on their meanings. After that schema building activity, I instructed the girls
to draw a picture that included at least eight of these terms, then share it
witch each other and try to find the included terms. I even made one myself to
give the girls more to observe. After this activity, I showed them the
different categories of fireworks and we pronounced them all together, the
hardest one being “chrysanthemum”. I
asked them what they were doing for their 4th of July and they told
me they were going to spend time with their Korean church group in a park. I’m
glad they can get a nice sense of the makes the 4th of July so
great.
