Jordan TS#5
On July 17th I tutored David for the second time. He is certainly not cutting me any slack. Which means I need to not cut him any in return. This is not my usual cup of tea, so I'm going to have to work outside my comfort zone to get things moving. He was not very responsive to my vocabulary game and refuses to do the little work it would take to get invested in any books I pick up. I'm struggling to get a sense of where his vocabulary level is at, so it's difficult for me to decided what is appropriate reading for him. I may not be a complete pushover, but we've still done no where near enough actual work for a session as I have only engaged him in very short spurts. Interestingly he was at peak engagement when I had him reading short bits from Wikipedia articles about NASA's space program. Unfortunately the high reading difficulty does not make that a viable option to craft a session around, and the last non-fiction book we looked at involved as much picture looking as word reading. I'm just going to have to keep trying new angles as much as I can and keep asking for ideas from everyone.

If space interests him, look up picture books that have enough words to have him engage in reading, but also enough pictures to absorb his attention. You can always teach him about the NASA space program as well. It might take a little more work since you would have to do the research, but I'm sure he would appreciate it. Good luck!
