Hwasil and I met for lunch today as our final conversation
partner meeting. As we walked from the
CIES building to the student union food court, which ironically she lead the
way since I have never been there before, we made small talk until she mentioned she
had been on a field trip in her class that morning. I leaped on that topic and peppered her with
questions. Where did you go? What did
you see? The class had visited a candy factory.
That gave me plenty of fodder to ask questions about how did they make
the candy? What kind of candy? Those questions do not lend themselves to yes
and no answers so she had to try to explain and she did a great job.
I had asked her during our last visit to come up with as many questions
as she could so I could help answer anything during this last session. She took me at my word and asked all sorts of
random questions. “Pam, where can I buy
shoe shelves?” Ok, I just happen to know
the answer to that as I provided that to my son heading off to college. “What should I ask the teacher at my son’s
school when we meet next week?”
As we ate our lunch, we plowed through several questions
until I was totally stumped by “Can you tell me a joke I can use to introduce
myself during my presentation?” Well I
can’t tell a joke in English to save my life, so I was not about to assist
Hwasil and maybe get her a ‘bad’ mark.
On that one, she was on her own… but we did have a laugh at my inability
to tell a joke.
It was a fun way to say
goodbye.
Sounds like a fun conversation. It's interesting what issues people have that they don't voice. I would have never expected a question about where to buy shoes.
