For some reason, I have no blog for my first tutoring session with Nayun, but hopefully I can remember what we did!
I remember being very nervous because Dylan said she was very shy and it took him about 15 minutes to get her to open up before beginning the lesson. I asked her to spell her name and she wrote it with ease. To gauge her knowledge, I began asking her to spell certain words. She knew so many! I was immediately impressed by her intelligence. She could spell almost all the days of the week and her writing was impeccable for a person her age.
I tested her limits by asking her to spell some larger words, such as, "elephant." If she had any doubts about the spelling of a word she would not even attempt to spell it. I could tell she didn't like to be wrong. For example, when I asked her to spell and word she was unsure about, she would say no, but I urged her to sound it out. After writing each letter, she looked up and asked if it was correct or not. Actually, after the first letter she did this, but for the rest of the letters in a word, she would say the letter before even wiring and ask if it was correct. This is an example of what I was referring to about her disliking being wrong.
We focused on spelling because that is what she was most interested in and I was able to assess a bit the level that she was at.
