Marco TS#1

I met David Hong at the public library around 4:30. I was warned he was trouble but I came prepared. I had magic tricks to grab his attention, suggestions of some of my personal favorites at 10, Goosbumps by R. L. Stine, and I was told his mother had workbooks for him to work on. My first impression was that he was a brat. I politely said "hi" and it was time to get to work and he responded with a "no" as he sat on the floor and browsed some books in a section that was quite frankly, below his reading level. I insisted and he followed me with two choices in his hands, a Lego book version of "Where's Waldo" and a book on dragons. We sat on the opposite side of the library and I decided to chat with him and see what I can find out to get him interested. Bruce had warned me about brushing up on my Lego knowledge, which I didn't. I figured that with an infamously notorious child for not doing work and being problematic I would have to find more subtle manner of enticing his interest in reading.
I had some tabs open on my computer that might catch his interest and ask me about so as to get him to engage with me more. It worked. He was asking me about certain things I had open, mostly Star Wars stuff, and I casually told him to focus and we'll talk about it later. We read about sharks and answered some questions on them at the end of the article. He said we didn't like scary stuff so instead of reading Goosebumps we read his book on dragons. Finally we did some work on his workbook that his mother brought. He wasn't as misbehaved as I thought he would be. So I showed him and his brother a magic trick.
