This was my first time meeting my second tutee. His name is
Kwon and he is from South Korea. Before our lesson, I asked him if there was
anything specific he wanted to work on and he said that he just wanted to
speak. When I met up with him, I double checked to make sure that there was nothing
else that he wanted to work on and he said that he was in reading class 3, but
only in speaking class 1. So for the duration of the session we just discussed
a number of topics. He said that he had already done his mandatory military
service in Korea as well as received a PhD. He was an ice hockey coach in South
Korea so he got his PhD in sports management and wanted to do research out in
Texas. He seemed to have a fairly high vocabulary, although he didn’t always
understand when I spoke it but when I wrote it down he understood everything.
This was proof of his high level reading and comprehension but it also showed
that he did indeed need to continue practicing his speaking and listening
skills.
