Sean TS #1

My first tutoring session was with two Korean girls aged eight and nine, both sisters. They had come here six months ago and are planning to leave in the next six months to South Korea. Naturally, I assumed that with only six months of practicing English in the U.S., and the girls currently enjoying their summer break, that these girls would be beginners, or foundation students. Boy was I wrong. These two girls, Hye-In (9) and Hye-Jeong (8) were both speaking English better than I was at their age. I had brought worksheets that included shapes, colors, and animals. I had crayons with me as well. But these girls were far too advanced for such things, although the girls, being young, did enjoy coloring on my worksheets. Fortunately, all of our meetings are in the “Books a Million” bookstore. Therefore, there are many children books of appropriate levels and situations for the girls to read and develop their language. After just socializing with the girls and finding out where they are and what their situation is, we read a book about “Cinderella” as the girls both enjoyed Disney Princesses.
